Community Development

A zoning permit is required when any building or structure is erected, reconstructed, or structurally altered, enlarged, or moved. A structure is "a construction or erection that requires permanent location on the ground, or attachment to something having a permanent location on the ground." Please contact the Community Development Department for a written opinion.

Building permits are obtained from the Orange County Building Department. You must first obtain a zoning permit from the Town of Orange Community Development Department. Once you have an approved zoning permit, you will then take that to the Orange County Building Department to obtain your permit.

All vehicles garaged in the Town must have a decal.

Utilites and taxes may be paid through Official Payments, Inc. The payer is responsible for the service charge. The payment may be made by using the link below or by telephone to 1-800-272-9829. The jurisdiction code is 6238. Please have your bill handy to refer to the 10 digit account number required for payment.

The Town water bills may be paid at the Town of Orange Finance Office located on the main floor in the Town Municipal Building at 119 Belleview Ave., Orange, VA.

The Town provides curbside trash collection to its residents, although they may use the county landfill and regional trash collection and recycling sites. Trash is picked up on the west side of the railroad tracks on Monday and Thursday and the east side of the railroad tracks on Tuesday and Friday. Holiday Trash Notices will also be noted on the Town's Community Access Channel.

Town real estate taxes are due June 5th and December 5th of every year. Town residents pay Town and County real estate taxes.

Yes we have several meeting places that you can reserve. There may be a fee attached to certain buildings. You can view them on the Parks and Meeting places web page.

There is Taylor Park on Main Street. A reservation for this park may be obtained off the Parks and Meeting Places Website Page under Enjoy our Town. There are also parks with playground equipment on Belleview Avenue, Newton Street, and on the corner of North Almond and East Main Street with parking off of Taylor Street.

Police Department

The Town of Orange Police Department is located at 119 Chapman St. From North Madison Rd (US 15 N), turn onto East Church St. Turn on to Chapman St., and the Police Department will be on the right.

The Town of Orange Police Department currently has 15 sworn officers, 1 civilian Community Services Officer, and 2 civilian support personnel.

Parking tickets can be paid in the Town's Finance Office located in the Town's Municipal Building located at 119 Belleview Avenue. The employees there cannot answer any questions concerning the issuance of the ticket. For that information, please contact the Town of Orange Police Department at (540) 672-1491. Please note that unpaid parking tickets will be reported to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to place a hold on registration renewals until the ticket is paid.

Decals are required for vehicles in the Town of Orange. Pursuant to Code of Virginia 46.2-752, if you purchase a new or used vehicle, you have 10 days to get a decal. Please contact the Town Finance Office in the Town of Orange Municipal Building at (540) 672-1020 for more information.

If you have recently moved to the Town of Orange, please note that you have 30 days to change your address on your vehicle registration and on your Virginia driver’s license. If you have moved to the Town of Orange from out of state, and are licensed in your prior state, please note that you have 60 days, under 46.2-308, to obtain a Virginia driver’s license, and 30 days to title and register your vehicle in Virginia, under 46.2-600. There is a DMV office in the Town of Orange located at Pro Auto Body on Rt 15 South, but the services offered are limited to Vehicle Titling and Registration. For services involving Driver’s Licenses, there are full service DMV Centers in Culpeper, Charlottesville, and Fredericksburg.

Low water pressure can occur for several reasons. If you experience low water pressure, you may call the Public Works Department at (540) 672-4791. We will check the pressure at our meter to determine if the pressure problem is a result of the Town's water system or something within the properties lines.

Generally, no. Regular pickup only includes two - 39 gallon cans or two - 39 gallon trash bags. Anything over and above this amount would be considered an extra pickup and may incur charges of a minimum of $50.00. If you wish to have a special pickup, you may call the Public Works Department to make arrangements. You may also take the items to the County landfill.
